A multi-stemmed native alder and the most common alder of the Rocky Mountains. In the wild it marks streams, springs and seeps, so use it where the ground stays wet, including low spots that defeat other trees. It fixes its own nitrogen and holds streambanks. Habit is leggy and somewhat crooked rather than tidy, and it is shorter lived than most trees its size.
