Stiff, branching stems with long, narrow leaves recline along the ground, rising into the air at the tips. Fringed, blue flowers are 3-4 inches acrosswith a bristly center.
Stokes' aster (Stokesia laevis) features large, shaggy, cornflower-like blooms in cool shades of lavender, blue, pink, or white, offset by smooth, leathery evergreen foliage. Because it grows as a low, mounding perennial (about 1 to 2 feet tall), the best companions provide vertical structure, fine textures, and warm color contrasts to make those blue-toned blossoms pop. Like Golden Rod, Purple Iris or yarrows.
